"I used to think that throwing cigarette butts down the drain was cleaning up. Since I know how many toxic things are in the butt, I know that's not a good idea." Ruven, 10 years old.
"The stubs are not good for the water and if animals eat it. They might die then." Ina, 8 years old.
"The grass can grow less well if there are cigarettes lying around." Levi, 6 years old.
Cigarette butts are not only an aesthetic problem
The toxins they contain are not good for humans, animals, plants and the environment. Their decomposition in fresh water is estimated at 15 years. In salt water, it is even estimated to take 400 years.
One cigarette butt is enough to pollute 1000 litres of water.
Ruven, Ina and Levi are Beat Schuler's children and they keep finding cigarette butts. To raise people's awareness they wanted to colour in information sheets and hang them up.
You are able to download the drawings as pdfs here (in german), if you would also like to hang some up or adopt the idea. We would be very happy about it!
